A neat medley I discovered on niconicovideo

Alternate linkl

This is basically a 25 minutes-long Touhou piano medley. And it is a very nice background music for those who work on whatever, reports, thesis, fictions.

Music is one of the charms of Touhou games. The style of the original soundtrack, and the fact that it is a doujin work (so the copyrights are somewhat more lenient than those of franchises like Guilty Gear), allows a lot of flexibility to doujin artists who can remix or replay the music in as many style as possible, as long as they retain the original melodies. The style can be trance techno, hardcore, house, jrock, jpop, metal, prog, classical or hiphop, any style can compute in the mind of the audience as long as they love the style and can recognize tunes like UN Owen was Her, or Necrofantasia, or God Wind Girl. Otoh, if one has tried to make a trance techno version of the tracks of Guilty Gear, you’d expect cold glances from the fans and maybe the Arc Systems Guys. Because Guilty Gear IS rock and metal and will be forever associated with these genres.

Touhou, otoh, thanks to its huge pool of remixes in the doujinshi market, can enjoy to offer a bit of every styles to everyone. Want silly techno with silly jpop? Enjoy your Iosys. More jpop jpop? Try Silver Forest. Metal and prog? Demetori is waiting for you! And of course, every touhou fans will have his own favorites circle according to his own personal tastes. I know one who dont like metal, but enjoy Silver Forest’ offer very much, while I tend to stay away from the hip-hop that was never my cup of tea. Another one prefer much the trance versions, and it can go on and on.

In conclusion, once you has tasted Touhou, be it the fighting games, the shooters or the doujins first, a whole new world of music open its arms to welcome you. It’s like a drug, you want to fill your winamp folder and your ipod with more and more remixes of what you have liked. And every days, weeks or months, you discover new gems.

Then you get thinking to yourself, “Oh god, I love internet”. Would you have discovered these doujin music circles if we were back in the 1980s where the musical corporations laws and words were absolute? Doubtful imo.

Hum, some touhou songs has parodied songs from other medias, “Tori no Uta” from Air, or “Koi no Mikuru no Densetsu” came in mind. However, those are mostly from the doujin albums and are not from the orginal soundtracks.
